This post has been a long time coming. Im fully aware this will cost me some friends on facebook, but if you leave, I have to question if we really were friends, or you just kept me around for nostalgia purposes. But, here goes. I am sick and tired of apologizing for being white. I am tired, sick and tired to be exact, of worrying that my father, a veteran HPD officer who is white, wont come home because some idiot across the nation screwed up. So for everyone on here slamming all of the white cops, back off. My dad has been an officer for 30+ years. Last I checked, he was white for all of them. He has never shot anyone. He has never profiled someone. His nickname on the force for years was smiley because the hardest criminals would get in the back seat of his car, and arrive at jail smiling, thanking my dad for helping them with advice on what to do to get out of trouble. My best friend is also a white cop. He retired after being a white cop in memphis, tennessee for 32 years. guess how many people he killed? none. guess how many people he helped? hundreds. My wiff? guess what, her dad is a white cop too. seeing a pattern? You see, growing up, we werent taught to fear or judge people by skin color. I didnt understand why the kids around me didnt like me, because i was nice to them. I couldnt understand why when my best friend of 20 years would get teased for hanging out with me when she went to school, because she was with that white girl. I cried the night she told me that the girls at school asked her if she was trying to be more white, because you hanging out with that white girl now. I couldnt comprehend hating someone for something they have no control over. Do you know how many times my dad scored higher on promotion exams than minority officers, but they needed more black cops, so they SKIPPED over his name, and all the other white officers ahead of him, and picked only minority cops? No, because HPD doesnt share that crap. Do you know what my family did every christmas for 10 years? We donated toys to underpriviledge children, food, so they could have christmas in their shack that was being warmed by their stove. We, those heinous white cops and their families, personally delivered them to those homes. Every officer assisting with that program was white. Does the media care about that? no. No ratings to it. Do you know how many times I was not eligible for scholarships and government assistance to go to college, because I was white? So before you try to convert me to this white cops are out of control and singling out black men, hashtag this... the day your father puts on a badge to protect someone elses freedom, and is at risk because of blind race baters in the media, you can judge me. Until then, quit correcting me for my color, quit judging all cops as if you know any of them, and educate yourself. I know far more good white cops than ones that would do things like Ferguson, things like NYC. And I know plenty of upstanding minority cops as well. Just like every other workforce out there, there are bad seeds in the groups. You will always have them. So, if you dont want to be profiled for being black, or hispanic, or whatever you feel your label is, quit judging whites and cops as a whole as well. Maybe someday we can meet in the middle, and judge the individual and not the entire ethnicity. Isnt that what Dr. King wanted anyway? You dont have to agree with me, but the next time I hear someone slamming cops as a whole, and focusing on the fact that they are white, Ill simply unfriend you. Its sad really, because several of them were kids my dad mentored while being a junior high youth pastor for the church we went to. I guess they forgot he was white. Or maybe he just doesnt count....
