This post is a little long, but I promise its worth it. One of the first cats I posted about when the NoVa Cats page began in February was 10 year old Selena. Selena arrived without so much as a name to Fairfax County Animal Shelter around this past January, with about 15 or so other neglected cats from a hoarding case. While the other cats all eventually got adopted, Selena sat quietly, taking it all in, and was constantly overlooked in favor of “prettier” and younger felines for about 2 months. While Selena is perfectly behaved and sociable, she had a less-than-delicate look about her that just didnt sell well. In the time that she was waiting and waiting for some TLC though, an unlikely someone was slowly falling in love with her. Enter Eleanor, a banjo-playing dynamo, devoted grandma, and also one of the most affable and kindest people you will ever meet. (Trust me on this.) Eleanors beloved husband, Joe, has Alzheimers and was residing at the time in a senior living facility. The facility had a sweet in-house dog named Mabel that Eleanor took a liking to and looked after on her visits with Joe. Unfortunately, Mabel nipped a toddler visitor was taken away by FCPD Animal Control to FCAS. Eleanor began visiting the shelter often to look in on the older dog, hoping to tell potential adopters about her. Eleanor would look at the cats too, and each time, the volunteers pointed out Selena, and explained that she really was a diamond in the rough. Eleanor already had 2 cats at home though, and had no intentions of adding to her brood. Lucky Mabel was fostered and found her forever home pretty quickly, but Eleanor kept visiting anyway…because she realized she was smitten with stoic Selena. In March, Eleanor adopted Selena and the cat was sent to the vet to be spayed. Imagine how shocked Eleanor must have been to hear that Selena was in fact a neutered MALE. No wonder Selena wasn’t so “pretty”—he was a big old tomcat! Eleanor renamed the big lug Amos Jeremiah. She says Amos eats like a horse and is quite happy in his new home with his 2 “sisters”, Grace, and Joy. And while Eleanor clearly adores Amos Jeremiah, she said she wouldn’t have given him a second look had she known he was male. We are so glad he fooled her! Incidentally, Eleanor still keeps in touch with the lovely couple that adopted Mabel, and Mabel is doing great too, as you can see. Thank goodness for people like Eleanor!! Wishing all a HEALTHY and HAPPY 2015! xx
