This post is meant to inform the public. Please share so others can learn some facts as well. As an MDCPS teacher for the past 15 years, I have never had to pay a monthly premium for my own health insurance. I added my husband as a dependent and later my son. I was paying over $530.00 for both of them each month. About 4 years ago MDCPS was increasing our dependent health insurance yet AGAIN. To the point that I looked into individual health insurance thinking theres no way Im gonna find something less expensive. Well to my surprise, I found BETTER coverage for them and it cost LESS. With less out of pocket expenses, smaller deductibles and even copay for office visits and medication cheaper then what MDCPS offers their own employees. With the monthly premium being about $437.00. Now how in the world can an individual plan cost LESS and have better benefits then that of a GROUP plan with 1000s and 1000s of people on this plan? Something is DEFINITELY shaddy here. Perhaps I really have been paying for my own health insurance all these years, in disguise. Naturally, I contacted our school board and of course, no response. Now we are here in the 2014-2015 school year and now I will have to start paying a monthly premium for the first time in my career. So while they want to inform the media we are getting a 2% raise which is a bunch of bull for a number of reasons..... those of us in this plan will be paying out what they didnt have to before. With this miniscule raise and the increase in health insurance, it pretty much cancels out this so-called raise. I guess I should look at the positive side, had I not been proactive for my family 4 years ago, Id be looking at paying $724.00 monthly! Im so tired of being sick and tired of struggling so much. Were given more and more responsibilities, cutting more positions, less supplies, etc, etc. I could go on forever. This entire city should be up and arms about all this. Why? Because even if you dont have a child in the public school system, you are still paying taxes that fund this system. Please share so the public can be accurately informed. At the end of the day, the decisions these ELECTED school board officials make....effect us ALL.
