This post makes me extremely uncomfortable, but Im just gonna go for it... I love the fact that I can share whats on my mind and it often connects with many of you. But sometimes I feel like I contribute to the significant problem of over idealizing our social media personas. I share my triumphs and stay conspicuously silent during times of anxiety or boredom or failure. Everyones lives seem amazing on social media, and seeing this, its not surprising to find ourselves wondering if were abnormal for having ups and downs in our own life. All this promotes a strangely obtuse dissatisfaction. But everyone does have downs and ups. Today Im feeling kinda weird and down and in a sort of anxious funk. Its a normal part of life that I usually would never post on social media. There are parts of my life Id like to change, but havent figured out how to yet. Its a huge process of triumphs and failures before the grand reveal of a lesson learned. These figuring it out parts are the really interesting parts of life that I think we all have in common but rarely share with each other. Usually we just share the positive stuff, the triumphs, the experiences that we think fit our image. I guess today Im just trying to say theres more than that -- its okay to share doubts and fragilities, too. Im not saying we always have to bare our souls in such a public forum. But just reminding anyone reading that social media isnt a genuine representation of the human experience. Im posting this on a day when Im actually feeling down just to highlight this sentiment as genuinely as possible. So heres to anyone else whos feeling kind of shitty today. Guess what...even though you dont see it, a bunch of us are right there with you, and its totally okay!
