This quote captures my concerns about GMO as food. The scientific consensus is that GMOs are safe for human consumption. I accept this. My concern is that the long term ecological impacts have not been adequately considered. Ironically, I think GMO technology could be the answer to some of agricultures most pressing environmental problems. GMO could also be used to create more nutritious foods (which it did with the golden rice project). Unfortunately, this is not how GMO technology is regularly used. The vast majority of GMO is grown today to increase the revenue of Monsanto, Syngenta and the like. In an era of morbidly obese malnourished people, we need less GMO and more backyard gardens.
