This season I am so lucky and thankful for my jobs. This season I have many teachers on my mind who deserve better. In particular, I am seeing a disturbing trend in so called Arts schools in the US. Can you call yourself an Arts school if practically all of your programs exist as after school programs? Furthermore, can you call yourself an Arts school if all of your academic teachers are full-time and your arts teachers are hired as adjuncts or part time without benefits? No, I dont think you can. Youre priority or emphasis is not on the arts at all. Many of these schools are forcing their students to raise millions of dollars to sustain these programs and they are PUBLIC SCHOOLS. Im sick of seeing teachers work full-time jobs and beyond and not be paid for their work. Why is the public allowing this to happen? If we dont speak up now this will be the future of Fine Arts education in public schools.
