This verse is quoted often in Christian circles, probably because it gives such a practical, clear picture of the benefit of relationships within the body of Christ! Just as two dull iron blades are lacking and inefficient in their work until rubbed together and sharpened, we too lack essential growth and effectiveness in our spiritual lives if we aren’t challenged and held accountable by other believers in our pursuit of holiness. If we want to stay “sharp” and productive for Christ, we need to “rub shoulders” with those who will challenge us with the truth of God’s Word on a regular basis. In my own life, sometimes this process has been refining and humbling, but oh so worth it! If my true heart’s desire is to become more like Jesus, I will purposely seek out relationships that accomplish this necessary, valuable “sharpening” in my life. Proverbs 27:17.
