This video has gone viral ... in my family room. My girls, and their brother, have watched it more times than I could count. The tune is catchy and the concept is intoxicating — tiny girl power. Girls can be engineers, mathematicians, inventors, entrepreneurs, and theyre destined for more than pink toys. I get that, and I believe it, and want my kids to believe it. But I dont think they need a girly toy to prove that. The current trend seems to be taking toys that were for everyone and making a girls only version. Tinker Toys, Nerf, Lego — these were gender neutral. But now theyve been pinkified, and I dont think it does girls any favors. Do we need a frilly Nerf crossbow and cutsy puppy and kitty Legos? And does there have to be a subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) down with boys attitude in order to advance the cause of girls?
