This video inspired me to share my mothers story: I truly understand the value of a supportive family plus friends during a time of crisis. My mom went through a potentially life altering procedure because of the growth on hear scull. Since she was a breast cancer survivor there was even more concern and fear for the worst. The doctors were not going to be able to tell the extent of damage, if any, until they completed the surgical procedure. My sister did all of the sitting with mom before the surgery, helping her mentally prepare for the uncertainty to come, reassuring her during the surgical prep work, and was with her when the doctors came to administer the anesthesia. They shave part of her head for the procedure. I came down later to Rochester Mayo Clinic to wait with my sister for the results and to be with her for her recovery. It was the best news anyone could have as the growth did NOT go into the lining of her brain and it was not cancerous. For me, seeing my 83 year mother so tiny and fragile after surgery with her head shaved was a mixture of emotions which included gratitude and concern for her recovery. Knowing what a beautiful woman my mom is (and throughout my entire life her hair has always been so perfectly coiffed), I decided to be a mirror image of her as well as looking for creative ways to hide this Frankenstein size scar. My mom looked in the colorful scarves she wore like headbands. When she recovered enough and was back home, I walked with her on her first trip to the small town grocery store. All the ladies who knew her there were so kind and made a huge fuss over her. We all were amazed at how quickly she recovered! I know beauty is only skin deep, but my mom demonstrated that day, how, with poise and bravado, one can get through any kind of adversity! I also found out I didnt look half bad in the matching scarf set. (Just saying...)
