This week in math we are working on the Common Core State Standard - TopicsExpress

This week in math we are working on the Common Core State Standard 4.OA.1. This standard basically says the student can write multiplication equations to solve word problems. It also says that they understand that multiplication is how many times one number is multiplied to get another number ( I understand that 45 is 9 times as many as 5 or 5 times as many as 9). Examples of things the students are working on are: Write this equation as repeated addition: 6 x 7 =. Answer-6+6+6+6+6+6+6=42 or 7+7+7+7+7+7= 42 Write an equation for this story problem, then solve the problem: Miss May has 18 paper clips. Mrs. Nichols has 9 times as many paper clips as Miss May. How many paper clips does Mrs. Nichols have? 18 X 9 = (10 X 9) + (8 X9) =162 Tim needs 47 pencils. 12 of his friends agreed to loan him 3 pencils a piece. Another friend agreed to loan him the remaining 11 pencils. Write an equation showing the number of pencils Tim will get from his 12 friends, and the amount of pencils he will get from the other friend in order to get the 47 pencils he needs. (12 X 3) + 11 = 47 The students are also practicing the 3s multiplication facts. We are also working on solving 2 digit by 1 digit multiplication problems using different strategies such as Open Area, Partial Product, Break up one number, and the traditional way. Ask your child to show you these strategies. In addition to solving these equations, we have been illustrating them with drawings, diagrams, or arrays. We are also writing story problems to match the equations.
