This week, the Obama Administration released hundreds of pages of formerly top secret documents from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. That’s the secret court set up to make sure the NSA’s spying programs didn’t violate any rules and invade Americans’ privacy. What the court papers show is that from the get-go and over at least three years, the NSA routinely violated the rules and invaded Americans’ privacy. Wired reports that since the earliest days of the NSA’s collection of metadata on U.S. phone calls, they carried out thousands of inquiries on phone numbers without any of the court-ordered screening designed to protect us from illegal government surveillance.
