This week we honor Joe Delia. When one thinks of the Skwentna - TopicsExpress

This week we honor Joe Delia. When one thinks of the Skwentna Checkpoint, Joe Delia is often one and the same. Since 1973, the first Iditarod, his home served as our checkpoint. A friend and adviser to Joe Redington, Sr., other founders of the race, and so many mushers, race fans, and ITC staff, Joe Delias assistance before the race with grooming trails and during the race as a checker, race judge, and other tasks over those many years, has helped shape Iditarod to be as we know it today. He and his wife, Norma, moved from Skwentna to Anchorage two years ago. Joe and Normas presence will always be felt not just during the race, but throughout the year. Joe passed away May 1 at the age of 84 years. Rest in peace, Joe Delia. Our thoughts and sympathy is with Norma and the rest of Joes family.... A celebration of life will be held at 1:30 p.m., May 18, at Iditarod Headquarters, 2100 Knik-Goose Bay Road, Wasilla. This will be a potluck event. Please bring a dish to pass. Join us in person if you are near our location or by sharing musings, remembrances, and images here on our ITC Facebook page. Well share your words with Joes family. Cards may be sent to Joe Delias family in care of ITC at 2100 S Knik Goose Bay Road, Wasilla, AK. 99654 Learn more about Joe at this link. iditarod/eye-on-the-trail-remembering-joe-delia-an-iditarod-legend/ You can also visit a facebook page created for Joe Delia and leave comments there for the family.
