This weekend Ill be co teaching a very special class with Eustace Conway on the fine art and science of shingle making. I happen to specialize in a variety of Appalachian shingle techniques but none so much as the white pine long shingle. Eustace developed a method for using this rarely used shingle wood when I was apprenticing with him in 1998-1999. I then took that knowledge and roofed the largest hand built single beam wooden structure in the world! See picture. The free of charge class is this Saturday, invitation only and intended for people who 1.) want to keep this knowledge preserved for future generations and 2.) would like to volunteer and help turtle island preserve keep its old time buildings functioning in the coming years. 3.) are good listeners, skilled with tools, and like to work hard.
