This weeks Vincents Auto Reviews Car of the Week is the second-generation 1997-2004 Dodge Dakota! Introduced in 1997, the all-new second-generation Dodge Dakota took its styling cues from the 1994 Dodge RAM Series, while condensing it into a smaller package. The base engine was an American Motors Corporation (AMC)-sourced 2.5L Power-Tech High-Output I4 that produced an acceptable 120 horsepower, from the Jeep Cherokee XJ and Jeep Wrangler TJ (this engine was offered from 1997-2002). The next step up was a 3.9L Magnum High-Output V6 that produced a competitive 173 horsepower (this engine was offered from 1997-2003). A 5.2L Magnum High-Output V8, an exclusive feature in the midsized pickup truck market, produced 225 horsepower (this engine was offered from 1997-1999). A 5.9L Magnum High-Output V8 produced 250 horsepower (this engine was offered from 1998-2003). A 4.7L Power-Tech High-Output V8 that produced 235 horsepower was also available from 2000-2004, and a 3.7L Power-Tech High-Output V6 that produced 210 horsepower was available only in 2004. Available in rear-wheel-drive (4X2/2WD/RWD) or part-time or full-time four-wheel-drive (4X4/4WD), the Dakota offered a range of four-speed or five-speed automatic transmissions, as well as a range of five-speed manual transmissions. The Dodge Dakota was offered in a two-door regular cab, two-door club cab, three-door quad cab, or four-door quad cab. A 1997 Dodge Dakota Base Regular Cab 2.5L 4X2, without options, listed for $12,725.00 MSRP, while a 2004 Dodge Dakota ST Regular Cab 3.7L 4X2, without options, listed for $19,870.00 MSRP. In 2001, the Dodge Dakota got a new steering wheel, new radio designs, an improved sound system, new interior door panels, new seat styles and designs, new interior color schemes, new key and keyless entry remote styles, and more. More engine options were added during the Dodge Dakotas production run. In 2004, production of the second-generation Dodge Dakota ceased to start production of the all-new, third-generation Dodge Dakota for 2005. Dodge Dakota assembly took place at Chrysler Corporations Warren Truck Assembly Plant in Warren, Michigan, where it was produced with some of the Dodge RAM models. Do you own, have you ever owned, or have you ever spent time in a Dodge Dakota like this? Let us know in the comments! (: #Dodge #Dakota #DodgeDakota #GrabLifeByTheHorns #COTW
