Its Dentistry 101 Wednesday! What is Calculus? Calculus - TopicsExpress

Its Dentistry 101 Wednesday! What is Calculus? Calculus (also referred to as tartar) is a calcified, hardened form of dental plaque. Dental Plaque is a biofilm that develops naturally on the teeth. It is formed by colonies of bacteria trying to attach themselves to the tooth surface. Initially, the plaque is soft enough to be scraped off with a fingernail (or a toothbrush :wink wink:). However, if left on the teeth for 48 hours, it begins to harden. After about 10 days, it has turned into Calculus, which is too hard to remove with a toothbrush. If calculus is allowed to remain on the teeth, it can eventually cause cavities and gum disease. The best way to prevent calculus is to practice good home care techniques (brush and floss everyday!) and visit your dentist twice a year for your dental check up! #farmingtonfamilydentistry #danfarleydds #jonathanheatondmd #dentistry101wednesday #calculus
