This year as a way to celebrate Black History Month I’m going to - TopicsExpress

This year as a way to celebrate Black History Month I’m going to focus on members of the LGBQT community. Black Culture and LGBQT has had an extremely problematic relationship to say the least. Black culture has demonized, attacked, shunned, silenced, and killed that side of itself. Yet the LGBQT voice in particular is often one of the most powerful within the African Diaspora. Beginning Black History Month with a quote from one of my favorite authors, James Baldwin, I hope to help illuminate the conversation that needs to had about this very important and unique side of black culture: “Most of us, no matter what we say, are walking in the dark, whistling in the dark. Nobody knows what is going to happen to him from one terrible moment to the next, or how one will bear it. This is irreducible. And its true for everybody. Now, it is true that the nature of society is to create, among its citizens, an illusion of safety; but it is also absolutely true that safety is always necessarily an illusion. Artists are here to disturb the peace. They have to disturb the peace. Otherwise, chaos.”
