This year has been a rough one for Hanford Football. His teammates on the sideline flowed away from Walla Walla senior quarterback Trever Coronado, bouncing up and down in celebration, as his understudy, Mitchell Lesmeister, finished off a 32-yard touchdown run in the final quarter of a game long decided. Coronado pumped his fist. Otherwise, propped on crutches, he didn’t budge. The Mid-Columbia Conference’s most efficient passer injured his left shin on the final play of the opening possession in Walla Walla’s 48-14 win over Hanford on Friday at Fran Rish Stadium, a victory which clinched the Blue Devils’ their first postseason berth since 2009. Although Walla Walla flexed depth, defensive toughness and offensive balance in easily putting the winless Falcons away — and although both Coronado and head coach Eric Hisaw expressed optimism that the senior will be back by next Friday — the injury stole a patch of shine from an otherwise joyful night for the program. “I’ll be good,” said Coronado. “Time will tell,” added Hisaw. “If he feels great, he’ll go next week. But I am concerned. It’s a huge concern. Fingers crossed.” Gerardo Gomez scored three first-half touchdowns and Walla Walla dominated after halftime to pull away in a game it trailed 8-7 early. Gomez gave Walla Walla a 7-0 lead on the series following Coronado’s injury when he darted into the backfield and intercepted a screen pass attempt by Hanford’s wily sophomore quarterback, Desmond Samples, and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown. After Samples hit Kendall Watson for a 58-yard touchdown and David Juergens’ conversion run made it 8-7 Hanford, Gomez had 28- and 20-yard touchdown receptions from Lesmeister as Walla Walla seized the lead for good before halftime. “We just had to do our jobs,” Gomez said. “Trev might be out; no matter what, we’re going to try our best.” The three touchdowns were a career high for Gomez, who had plenty of help as the Lesmeister-guided offense continued to adjust the scoreboard. Walla Walla churned out 174 rushing yards after halftime, including scoring runs by Lesmeister (of 32 yards), Brennan Barberich (two yards) and Willie Hayes (35), and Lesmeister added a 47-yard TD bomb to Jason Wicklund. “(Assistant coach) Pat Graham did a great job getting Mitch comfortable,” Hisaw said. “And the big boys took over up front and helped the young pup out.” “After (Coronado) came out, we just focused on beating them off the ball,” added Gomez. Walla Walla (5-3, 5-1 in league) secured the Mid-Columbia Conference’s No. 2 4A playoff berth and will travel to play the Greater Spokane League’s top 4A seed in a winner-to-state crossover game on Nov. 7 or Nov. 8. It closes the regular season next Friday against Kamiakin, the conference’s top 3A team, at Borleske Stadium in Walla Walla. Coronado said he would have an X-ray on Saturday. The injury occurred when he sustained a blow to the outside of his left shin while planting his foot to make a cut. Samples came up gimpy for the Falcons (0-8, 0-6) after a short run late in the fourth quarter and was replaced by Grant Cowan. Hanford wraps its season next Friday when it visits Kennewick.
