Thisday Shagari: We’re Not Scared of Bafarawa’s Defection to PDP 28 Jan 2014 By Mohammed Aminu Sokoto State Deputy Governor and leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Alhaji Mukhtari Shagari, Monday welcomed the defection of a former governor of the state, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the PDP. Shagari, who has remained in the PDP despite the defection of the governor, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko, to APC, however, dismissed insinuations that PDP leaders in the state were jittery of Bafarawa’s action, which he described, as a good step in the right direction. Bafarawa had last week resolved to defect to the PDP, following irreconcilable differences with Wamakko and the recognition of a nine-man interim state executive committee of APC, comprising loyalists of the governor by the party’s national leadership. The former governor had accused the national leadership of the APC of bias and injustice. But Shagari told journalists in Sokoto, that he was not scared of the defection of Bafarawa to PDP stating that he would try to hijack the party’s machinery in the state. According to him, Bafarawa’s defection to the PDP will further boost the fortunes of the party in the state, contrary to insinuations in some quarters. He also disagreed with the claims that Bafarawa’s move to the PDP would lead to acrimony and formation of factions in the party, saying rather, it will enhance unity among members. Shagari stated that he was not scared of being dominated by the former governor, adding that the new members would be carried along in the scheme of things without any discrimination. “We see Bafarawa’s move to the PDP as a good development that will further strengthen the party in the state. “In fact, he is welcome to the PDP and we are ready to work with him in order to achieve our targets. So we are happy that he decided to join us and we will treat all members equally without any discrimination,” Shagari said. He added that the PDP was a party for all Nigerians, while no single leader could lay claim to its ownership. The deputy governor expressed his readiness to work with anybody that would improve the party and ensure unity and peace among its members.
