Thor 2 was fantastic. Truthfully, I enjoyed it more than the first one, as the first one went from shiny action spectacle to Earth-bound love story (not that it was bad!) pretty quickly. One thing most people will notice is that Thor 2 can be extremely funny. Unlike the first movie, in which a good bit of the laughs come from the fact that Thor is so hopelessly unfamiliar with our world, sarcasm, absurdity, and bravado make up most of the humor. Theres a cameo in the movie that had the audience roaring-- I wont give it away, but it was amazing. It works, not just to get a laugh out of the audience, but also helps ensure that the heavier bits dont overwhelm the audience. Unlike the first movie, The Dark World manages to balance action and drama/comedy. If you are going to the theater to see shiny things and be entertained, have no fear. What was amazing? Best character and actor in the entire movie was easily Loki/Hiddleston. Not only does Tom Hiddleston play Loki perfectly (once again), but I have to give credit to the writers for giving him an amazing part and writing the character so wonderfully. Loki is such a nuanced character. He could have easily been a Snidley Whiplash-type trickster, whose motives were completely obvious to the other characters and audience. He could have also been really annoying and whiny (WHY DOESNT DADDY LIKE ME?! WHY IS THOR SO AWESOME?!), which thankfully was also avoided. If I have a complaint regarding Loki, its that we dont see him near enough. The only characters I didnt enjoy were Sif and Jane. What was Sifs point? Is she a love interest or another warrior in the gang? They dont go with one or the other, nor do they successfully blend the two. They seemed to have started out with one thing in mind, and then completely forgot about it as more interesting things unfolded. And Jane-- I love Natalie Portman, and I dont think she did badly acting-wise, but her character was flatter than a doormat. Everyone else around her (even characters who are supposed to be minor) are much more interesting than she ever is and she is mostly defined by the googly eyes she makes at Thor. Overall, Thor: The Dark World is a movie I could definitely sit through again, not just for the humor and solid action sequences, but also for the little gems (literally, hehe) that were tucked throughout the movie. After the film, a friend mentioned a few things he had noticed, which frankly, I had completely missed. Like many of the other Marvel movies, Thor 2 serves not just to entertain you in the present, but also get you more excited for things to come. The after credit scene will pique the interest of non-comic readers and make comic readers ecstatic about the future of our Avengers.
