Those folks who are working in jobs which pay minimum need a reason to move up, not a reason to stay where they are. The starting wage at any job is going to be what they are willing and can afford to pay you based on your knowledge of the job and your ability and willingness to perform it. Your learn more, become more proficient, gain confidence and make yourself ready to take on more duties, prove yourself reliable and you move up the wage scsle. That is the way it should work. Some folks have an elevated sense of self worth and some just want more and are not willing to work and wait, this group of folks see the owner as someone who takes advantage rather than provides an opportunity. These are the folks who want the union and to raise the minimum wage. The are the folks who have, for whatever reason, become that part of the workforce who want the benefits without the effort. These are the folks the government buys loyalty from, these are the folks who are the victims of income equalization (minimum wage), the folks whose statistics the government parades in front of us. A mandated wage is another tool used by governments to achieve income equalization and to portray itself as the daddy of us all. You know, they cant earn a raise in pay based on performance, knowledge and reliability so they need a big brother to handle their business. To make sure the man who provided them an opportunity does not, through his hard work and commitment, out earn his slovenly coworkers. Socialism is a difficult concept for me to swallow, one because it has failed miserably in the past and two because it is a theif. Socialism robs from the individual the desire to achieve more, to be inovative, to personally be responsible for your station in life. It uses income difference to create animosity in the work place. Production stays the same and soon the minimum wage becomes the maximum and boom the socialist objective...income equalization...it only came at the expense of ambition, reliability, loyalty, ingenuity, and fair play.
