Thought I would tell my friends about Abbeyfield.I have been on the board here for a year and act as advocate for the residents. We have a beautiful 10 room establishment here just a few years old. It took the community 7 years to get it built.each resident has an ensuite room opening onto a garden, there is a resident manager who prepares lunch and tea,but each person must be able to care for themselves.so we have some quite feisty residents who because of loneliness, rife among the elderly, can belong to a supportive group yet remain independant.flatting really.our folk are aged between 76 and 93.I also belong to Greypower here and Lawrence and I are on the committee. We are going to the national conference in Invercargill from may 4th.so we expect to hear some interesting speakers.my research on hearing aides set me off on becoming active to stand up for our rights.as elderly people we get targeted by all sorts of things and Greypower has the ear of the goverment on many issues. We live in a very vibrant area with a young transient population and the elderly are forgotten a bit.Abbeyfield has about 10 houses throughout N.Z.and was started in England in 1955.it is now in many countries.I really enjoy the positive people in their 40s and 50s who are on the board.tremendous expertise given voluntarily.my life as a working artist is now finished.
