Three Tamaraws engage in global humanitarian vision and action Three Tamaraws engaged in a short but meaningful stint of global humanitarian service with 620 youth leaders from 47 countries during the 5th University Scholars Leadership Symposium held on August 1 to 7, 2014 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The Far Eastern University delegates was composed of Stephanie Gaña, president of the Institute of Education Student Council; Gladis Morales, vice president for internal affairs of the FEU Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants; and Jhonalyn Concha, SDev coordinator. They were exposed to leadership principles and practices that support and empower the world’s less fortunate. They learned the advocacies of CNN Heroes of the Year Ibu Robin Lim (2011), Pushpa Basnet (2012), and Ponheary Ly (2010). They were introduced to prototypes of humanitarian service through organizations founded by Geraldine Cox of Sunrise Children Home, Christian and Marie-France des Pallieres of Pour un Sourire dEnfant, and C.D. Singh of Science of Life Studies. The Philippines’ top leadership guru Francis Kong shared a compass on how to be on track with goals, American international trainer Pamela Wigglesworth discussed how to be an everyday hero, and New Zealand’s personal brand coach Pallas Hupe Cotter shared how to live an extraordinary life. Capping the symposium was a brief immersion or “learning journey” with selected communities. Gaña, a Special Education major, went to Pour un Sourire d’Enfant (PSE) and mingled with special children. Morales, a volunteer teacher for out-of-school youth, visited the Sunrise Children Home and played with orphaned children. Concha, an advocate of the environment, joined the clean-up and tree-planting activities. FEU’s participation in this international symposium is part of SDev’s thrust of strengthening community-based leadership among its student leaders. On the need for global humanitarian vision and action, Morales said:“The 5th University Scholars Leadership Symposium imparted new ideas, ignited inspiration and established global connections, yet its success lies whether I put them into practice or not. I have dreams. I may have planned them and did some baby steps, but I must do it continuously. I will do it for a greater cause. I will do it for humanity.”
