Three months ago, and over 40 pounds heavier, I realized that I became that guy, the one who is described as a “big guy.” Friends and family would tell me that I was just big, you know, broad. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks, I was fat, but most importantly, I was in the worst shape of my life. A friend of mine, Bob, asked if I wanted to go to Crossfit Huachuca with him and I just kept putting him off by making excuses. I had become a professional excuse maker, even to the point that I had actually fooled myself into believing that I wasn’t that out of shape. Through Bob’s persistence of not letting my excuses deter him from getting me to go, myself and our friend Ryan gave in. We went to a free community workout and we were hooked from there; our journey to fitness was paved. The environment allows for us to get a great workout, while having a blast! In my younger years, I was referred to as a gym rat. I was expecting the traditional gym scene, you’ve seen it, the people with the biggest muscles and least amount of fat have the right to portray the worst attitudes towards us lowly junk food eating, soda drinking, couch potatoes. Well, as soon as I walked into Crossfit Huachuca I knew this place was going to be different. They referred to me as an athlete as soon as I walked in, still in the traditional gym mode and mindset, I stepped aside to make room for the athlete that must have been trying to walk through the door behind me. I quickly realized that they were actually referring to me. The members and coaches at Crossfit immediately walked up and introduced themselves and made me feel as though I had been going there for years. So the first workout started and it was very tough, but I made it and my dignity was still intact. It was a blast, there was something addicting about it, you just have to experience it for yourself.
