Three years ago I decided to read all the scriptures every year. I just finished reading all the standard works for the 4th time. I was surprised that the Old Testament has become one of my favorite reads. I didn’t expect that, and especially the Psalms. Think of these poems, songs and prayers attributed to David and the reflections of pain and suffering, or rejoicing connected to the circumstances of his life. I love to compare them to mine and learn from them. Example: “Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.” Isn’t it great that God “enlarges” us, makes us grow, stretch and requires more of us than we would otherwise require of ourselves. How else would we make it? How else would we persevere in sorrow and grief and rejoice in the process. I like what Elder Holland said, “Thus distress enlarges us, eventually lifts us with wings of eagles. Stay in the race. Keep running. Keep walking. Keep praying. The Lord will renew your strength.”
