Through it all . . . * * * But back of this still broods silently the deep religious feeling of the real Negro heart, the stirring, unguided might of powerful human souls who have lost the guiding star of the past and are seeking in the great night a new religious ideal. Someday the Awakening will come, when the pent-up vigor of ten million souls shall sweep irresistibly toward the Goal, out of the Valley of the Shadow of Death, where all that makes life worth living—Liberty, Justice, and Right—is marked For White People Only.” * * * Souls of Black Folks, by W.E.B. DuBois -- closing of chapter 10: Faith of our Fathers * * * The following is my tweaking of that paragraph to reflect its continuing 21st century pertinence: * * * But through it all – the savagery, brutality, injustices and inhumanity suffered in the so-called “new world”— there continues to exist deep within the religious feeling of the true African heart, the stirring, unguided might of powerful human souls who have lost the guiding star of the past, who are seeking in this horrific night the recovery of the light which that star can bring to their search for the path out of the Valley of the Shadow of Death, where all that makes life worth living — Liberty, Justice, and the Pursuit of Happiness — is systematically marked “Not For African Consumption.” Someday the Awakening will come, when the pent-up vigor of those millions of souls shall truly see the light of that bright shining star and sweep irresistibly out of that Valley and thrive on the Old/New Path that Sankofa vision illuminates, toward the omnipresent Divine/Human ideal, where all that makes life worth living — Truth, Justice & Righteousness; Harmony, Balance & Sacred Right Order -- is marked “Rooted in the Souls of the African Pioneers of Humanity and Civilization.” Mxolisi T. / Ozo-Sowande Ankh, Udja, Seneb!!!
