Throughout Italy, the last-names of Bell & Fountain (variations on Campana & Fontana, respectively), are common, not merely because many people were involved with the work surrounding bells & fountains, but they were vital to very life of Italians & Sicilians. For example, fountains often supplied drinking-water with underground clay cisterns that science now knows eradicated germs. As to bells, there’s a philosophy across Italy with the notion that the sound of your local bell was the border where the outside world began—it’s called CAMPANILISMO and it means your allegiance is to your neighbors, not outsiders.
