Throughout history the only time there has been poverty has been when a natural disaster occurred, a famine or a plague. The greatest unnatural disaster however, in my opinion, that has plagued us, is capitalism. Some will say that capitalism worked until money got into politics through lobbying and campaign finance. Others will say that capitalism worked until paper money took over. However you look at it, lifelong debt, poverty and homelessness have been the ultimate byproducts of modern capitalism, not wealth. When you consider the wealth gap, the exponentially shrinking middle class and the fact that most of the world’s wealth is controlled by so few it’s not a stretch to say that capitalism is failing us. And why is capitalism failing us, because it so easily enables greed and puts profits over people.
