#ThrowbackThursday #TBT #onthisday Top class middle distance horse, Septimus, won on his second start on this day back in 2005. The Ballydoyle colt took the Group 2 Beresford Stakes at the Curragh under Seamie Heffernan, and justified odds-on favouritism. Held up at the rear of the field, he remained close to the leaders and tracked them before the pair made their move 100 yards from the finish, and ran on well to record a one length victory. Septimus was disappointing in his next two races but bounced back to form by taking the Dante Stakes in blistering fashion, winning by eight lengths. He disappointed in the Derby a few weeks later but was again in the winner’s enclosure in some good races as he won the Lonsdale Cup and the Doncaster Cup in 2007. In 2008, he took the Curragh Cup, before going on to win a Classic as he triumphed in the Irish St Leger. In what some people believe to be his most impressive victory, he recorded a thirteen length victory from Ballydoyle stable-mate, New Zealand. Tragically, he passed away in 2010 at the age of seven after complications following a gelding operation.
