#ThrowbackThursday Yosemite Falls from the Upper House & The Grizzly Giant, Mariposa Grove, Yosemite, 1861. by Carleton E. Watkins (1829–1916). Mammoth-plate albumen prints, California Historical Society. In July 1861, the date of the first major Civil War battle at Bull Run, Carleton E. Watkins journeyed into Yosemite. His beautiful mammoth prints—named for their large glass-plate negatives—of the Yosemite Valley and the Big Trees were displayed a year later at the Goupil Gallery in New York, right on the heels of the Mathew Brady Studio’s shocking exhibition of photographs of corpses strewn across the Antietam battlefield. California Senator John Conness owned a set of Watkins’ Yosemite prints and may have shown them to President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. See the original and full-sized mammoth prints in Yosemite: A Storied Landscape, opening June 29th. #YosemiteInTheCity #Yosemite150
