Thursday, January 1, 2015 This Day In American History On January 1, 1781, During the American Revolution, 1,500 American Continentals from the Pennsylvania line mutinied near Morristown, New Jersey. Frustrated by a lack of consistent pay and insistent that their enlistments had expired, the eleven Pennsylvania regiments of General Anthony Wayne revolted, killing three officers. The group of Mutineers then departed George Washingtons Morristown encampment in a rage, continuing south until they had captured the town of Princeton. The disgruntled soldiers next planned to march to Philadelphia and confront the Continental Congress, but Congress emissaries approached them first. Listening to the mutineers grievances, the representatives talked with the Pennsylvanians for three days before finally coming to terms. Congress agreed to allow more than half of the mutineers return home if they wished, while the others were offered a furlough and a bonus for reenlistment.
