Tina’s Tidbits Week of July 7th, 2013 Fruity Pests Have you ever noticed the pesky little flying insects that get into your house by secret passages? I am talking about fruit flies. I do not get them very often but when I do they are a nuisance. I am never quite sure where they come from and it seems like they multiply within a few hours. One way that I got rid of some that I had hanging around is by putting a cut up apple inside a jar with the lid off, then when I noticed I had caught a number of the pesky insects I put the lid on the jar and shook the jar as hard as I could. The apple inside the jar clobbered the little guys and knocked them dead. Then I would open up the jar and start the process all over again. In a matter of a couple of days I was able to get rid of my fruit fly problem. One article I had read in Real Simple magazine written by Brigitt Hauck enabled me to come up with my adapted solution. You can read the article at simplystated.realsimple/2013/06/11/how-to-get-rid-of-fruit-flies/ Yummy for Your Tummy? Speaking of bugs and what they eat, let’s turn the table and speak of bugs, the kind YOU can eat. The July/August 2013 edition of Sierra Magazine had an interesting article entitled “Eat Your Bugs” written by Peter Frick-Wright. I for one have eaten a few insects in my day, especially when we held a Teen Food Fear Factor at the library. A couple of insects I have tried were fried mealworms (taste like chicken and not much to them) and dried crickets (did not like how the legs stuck in my teeth). I did learn a few things from the article. For one thing there is a book called The Eat-a-Bug Cookbook by David George Gordon which calls termites “the other white meat” and to “be careful not to overcook scorpions; because the exoskeleton traps steam and they are messy when they pop but if you get it right they taste like soft-shell crab”. The article itself is a very interesting read and it even gives a recipe for Sheesh! Kabobs. I know some of you may cringe about the thought of eating insects but I have read in another article that there are already bug parts in a number of food items that we eat on a daily basis (huffingtonpost/2012/03/21/bugs-in-food-fda-allows_n_1370288.html). Food for thought. From Funky to Fudge Well, enough about bug parts and edible bugs, lets finish this week’s tidbits off with a new online newsletter I found entitled “the gardening cook” (thegardeningcook/) This is a delightful newsletter that has recipes, do-it-yourself type projects and household tips. I love two ingredient recipes and one that it mentioned was peanut butter fudge which you make with a tub of vanilla frosting and a jar of creamy peanut butter. It is as simple as placing the two together in a microwave safe bowl, melting a little, mixing together, pouring into a foil lined dish and then refrigerating. Yum, yum. The best thing is that I would bet you could find these two ingredients at a dollar store but it would feed a lot of people. (thegardeningcook/easiest-peanut-butter-fudge-ever/). Let me know what recipe you like from “the gardening cook”. That’s all for this week, I want to give you time to nibble on this week’s tidbits and find a few favorites to share with me.
