Tip 1: Change Your Filter Regularly – regular maintenance can save you lots of money and extend the life of your air conditioning system, in addition, a good filter can remove contaminants and airborne pollutants in the air. The amount of money you want to spend and type of filter depends on your needs- remember you get what you pay for- A common type of filter is a Standard Panel , made of fiberglass and usually are changed out monthly since it only has a 5% dust spot efficiency rating. Electrostatic Filters have a dust spot efficiency rating of 10%-15%. Extended Surface filters have a 20%-40% dust spot efficiency rating. If you have pets or have family members with allergies, you should consider purchasing an allergen-reducing filter which can have a dust spot efficiency rating of up to 90%. Filters should be changed every 3-6 months, depending on how dirty they become. Be proactive and inspect your filter monthly. Tip 2: Set Your Thermostat to 78º when you leave for the day - By setting your thermostat to 78° it will not use nearly as much energy to cool the house down later when you return. A programmable thermostat is your best option to keep those energy bills low and manageable. REMEMBER: Do NOT turn off the air conditioning completely; your home takes twice as long to cool down because of trapped heat inside the walls. Tip 3: Hose Down the Outside Condenser – Believe it or not, washing down your outside condenser and cleaning off the accumulated dust and dirt can make your air conditioning system last long and run better. A simple hose down will keep the filter from debris build up and give you better a/c performance. This tip can keep more money in your pocket during this time of the year.
