Tirukkural is universal:Yu Si, the Taiwanese poet who translated Thirukural in Mandarin. Taiwanese poet Hung Ching-Yu, who writes under the pseudonym Yu Hsi, was conferred the Tiruvalluvar award by PWD minister to mark Tiruvalluvar Day celebrations in the city on Wednesday. Yu Hsi won the award for his translation of Tirukkural, the epic poem by Tiruvalluvar, into Mandarin. I have received many awards, but I consider this a prestigious and special one, Yu Hsi said after receiving the award. After reading the Tirukkural, he said he realised THIRUVALLUVAR was the important philosopher who was well-versed in ethics, statecraft and citizenship. I acknowledge the Tirukkural as a universal scripture for there is no specific reference to any particular race, religion, country or rule, Hsi said. His tryst with TAMILNADU began seven years ago, when he listened to a Tamil poem by former Supreme Court judge S Mohan, who led a delegation to Taiwan for the Crane Summit Conference in 2007. He also heard about then President A P J Abdul Kalam and met him at Rashtrapati Bhavan. During a programme in Chennai in 2010, Kalam suggested that Yu Hsi translate the Tirukkural. It is a collection of 1330 couplets in 133 chapters written by Tiruvalluvar. Translating a work like Tirukkural into Mandarin was a challenge, said Hsi. I love TAMILNADU and adore Tamil and its beauty. I rate Tamil literature ageless. Its very special for me and also the reason why I translated Tirukkural into Mandarin, said the poet who has published a number of books in Mandarin. Asked if his love for Tamil literature will continue with more translated works, Hsi said, I have now finished translating the poems and songs of Subramanya Bharathi and Bharathidasan into Mandarin. I am happy to introduce my people to rich literature. I may take up more works in future. Yu Hsi was the first Mandarin writer to receive the Franz Kafka Medal for Literature, instituted by the Czech Republic in 2011.
