‘Tis the day after Christmas. And in the United Kingdom, - TopicsExpress

‘Tis the day after Christmas. And in the United Kingdom, Canada, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Kenya, South Africa, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Norway and Sweden it is known as Boxing Day. There are arguments as to how the name was arrived at, but the tradition started in England 800 years ago, during the Medieval Age. It was the day when the town churches opened their alms boxes and distributed the previously collected monies to the poverty stricken. Later in history, but still celebrated on the same day, Boxing Day became a holiday where those of the aristocracy would show their appreciation to their servants and trades people by giving them the day off, and a Christmas box filled with money, maybe a frivolous trinket, food and/or clothing. Although most of the big mansions with their upstairs/downstairs existence a la Downton Abby have fallen by the wayside, the holiday is still celebrated today. All that said I still utterly failed at finding a film that showed a Boxing Day celebration. So, I opted for the other meaning of boxing – as in two pugilists pummeling the stuffing out of each other in the ring – and chose the trailer from one of my favorite films involving fisticuffs: 1992’s DIGGSTOWN.
