Title: Christians and Muslims Text: Luke 9:25-26 Romans 1:15-17 25 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost? 26 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in His Father’s, and of the holy angels. Romans 1:15-17 15 So, as much as is in me, I am ready to preach the gospel to you who are in Rome also. 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.” People have long talked about the idea that “all religions are basically saying the same thing.” This morning we want to examine that idea a little more closely when it comes to Christians and Muslims. Muslims mention Jesus and claim to revere him. So must we ask the question, “Do Muslims believe in Jesus like we do?” In order to answer that question, lets look at some key differences between Muslim and Christian belief. Colossians 4:5-7 says: 5 Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. 6 Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one. Islam, means submission,Its religion came out of Muhammads teachings. Muslim submits to the will of Allah as revealed by Muhammad. Allah is the Arabic term for God. Muhammad was an Arab born in the city of Mecca in A.D. 570 (died A.D. 632). He claimed that the angel Jibreel came to him to restore true religion in Allah to the world. The Qur’an (Koran) is Arabic for the recitation, Referring to the revelations given by Allah, through his archangel to Muhammad. The Koran is the Islamic scriptures. Muslims believe in the Law of Moses, the Psalms of David, and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Ayatollah refers to a spiritual master or leader. Jihad refers to a Muslim holy war or spiritual struggle against infidels. Let me just share some very basic differences between Christians & Muslims! 1. CHRISTIAN: Believe The Bible is God’s Word. For Christians its our only written authority! The Bible - Old and New Testament - is Gods authoritative Word for us.2 Peter 1:20-21 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. Men wrote it! but under Gods watchful eye & authority! #1. MUSLIM: Believe The Quran is God’s Word. The Quran is God’s most recent and final work. - it supersedes all others. even the bible! Muslims believe that the Torah of Moses, the Psalms of David, and the Gospel of Jesus. While being holy books they have all been corrupted by Christians and Jews #2. CHRISTIAN: Believe Jesus is the Son of God. We as Christian believe as plainly stated in John 10:30 - Jesus said, “I and the Father are one.” #2. MUSLIM: Believe Jesus is one of the prophets. Muslims believe that Jesus is a prophet like Ezekiel or Daniel. But not as important as the prophet Muhammad. In fact, the Quran states in Surah 4:17 - “Jesus. . . was only a messenger of Allah. . . #3. CHRISTIAN: Believe Jesus died on the cross. Matthew 27:41-42 41 Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the scribes and elders, said, 42 “He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him. • The cross is essential to our Christian belief that Jesus died on the cross. #3. MUSLIM: Believe Jesus did not die on the cross. Muslims believe, however, that Jesus was condemned to die on the cross. But He was not crucified. • The Quran states in Surah 4:155 - “they did not slay him, neither crucified him, only a likeness of that was shown to them.” Many Muslims believe that Judas was crucified in Jesus’ place and that Jesus went straight to heaven. • The Muslim view is that if He died, He failed. #4. CHRISTIAN: Believe God is the source of all good. Matthew 19:16-17 16 Now behold, one came and said to Him, “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?” 17 So He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. #4. MUSLIM: Believe Allah is the source of good and evil. Muslims believe that Allah is the source of absolute will and we are all just puppets. The Quran states in Surah 37:94 - “All other things are passive. Allah alone is active.” In the Muslim faith you can justify the actions of September 11. #5. CHRISTIAN: Believe God is love. John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. Romans 5:8 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. • #5. MUSLIM: Love is not used to describe Allah. Allah’s supreme attribute is justice, not love. in the Quran. The word love appears in several forms Appox. 551 times in our bibles! In the Koran 69 times. #6. CHRISTIAN: Believe God is our Father. In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus teaches us to pray by calling out to God! With the affectionate title “Our Father.” Matthew 6:9-10 The Lords Prayer! • 9 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. 10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. #6. MUSLIM: Believe It is blasphemous to call Allah “Father.” For Muslims, the underlying issue is that Allah is unknowable. You cannot really know him. Allah is not affected by our actions or attitudes. We believe the Bible teaches that our Father created us for a relationship with Him. #7. CHRISTIAN: Believe that Humans are born with a sinful nature since the first man Adam! Romans 5:12 says: 12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned— • Ephesians 2:1 explains our situation when it comes to sin. ( And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins ) #7. MUSLIM: Believe There is no original sin. But Muslims believe that Adam and Eve sinned, But they repented and were restored. They believe that no permanent consequences came from their actions. Therefore, because no one is lost, there is no need for a Savior. Thats why you must earn your way to heaven! #8. CHRISTIAN: Believe Salvation comes by grace. 1 Peter 5:10 10 But may he God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. Ephesians 2:8-9 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. Its all about Gods grace for us! #8. MUSLIM: Believe Salvation comes by works. Muslims, pursue heaven by following the five pillars of Islam: • Pillar #1. “There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the Prophet of Allah.” • You are to state this publicly in order to become a Muslim. Pillar #2. Prayer You must pray five times a day . When you get up. At noon. In the middle of the afternoon. After sunset. And before going to sleep. All in Arabic while facing Mecca. Pillar #3. Almsgiving - All Muslims are to give a certain percentage of their income for the poor. Pillar #4. Fasting - They are to eat no food from sun up to sundown during the holy month of Ramadan. Pillar #5. The Pilgrimage (Hajj) - A Muslim is expected to make a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their life. Muslims - By faithfully living out the five pillars. Muslims are working their way to heaven. O.k. #9. Last one. CHRISTIAN: Believe that Religious violence is not in Jesus’ teaching.Matthew 5:43-45 43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. • The crusades are part of catholic history! Thats why we have protestants today! It means protest! we believe in trusting in God by faith alone! And the catholic church killed them for it! #9. MUSLIM: Believe Religious violence fulfills Muhammad’s teaching. Their Holy book - The Quran is clear on the place of religious violence: Surah 9:5 - “Fight and slay the pagans whenever ye find them.” • Surah 9:29 - “Fight those who believe not in God nor the Last Day.” In closing: I hope this will help most of you in your faith! The next time you here someone say “All religions teach the same things, • That simply isnt true! Actually it couldn’t be further from the truth. What Muslims and Christians believe is not the same. What Muslims and Christians believe are completely opposite & opposed to each other. Heres one of Muhammads sayings: Shall I not inform you of a better act than fasting, alms, and prayers? Making peace between one another: enmity and malice tear up heavenly rewards by the roots. I wonder why the extremeous dont read and practice what Muhammad said here!It says in: John 14:1-10 • “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. 4 And where I go you know, and the way you know.” 5 Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. 7 “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.” 8 Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.
