Tjanpi Desert Weavers is the dynamic social enterprise of the Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (NPY) Women’s Council, a 34 year old Indigenous-directed organisation that delivers a wide range of health, social and cultural services to Aboriginal people in 28 communities across 350 000 sq km of Australia’s Central and Western desert regions. One of these is the domestic and family violence service, which since 1994 has persistently advocated for the rights of women and children from the NPY Lands to live free from violence and to have access to the full protection of the law. The NPYWC Domestic and Family Violence service celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Last Tuesday was White Ribbon day, the national, male led campaign to end men’s violence against women. Many morning teas were held on this day in communities across the NPY lands to mark the occasion, and to celebrate 20 Years of the NPYWC DV service. The event at womens council HQ in Alice Springs was so fantastic, with talks by many inspired speakers, and the launch of this incredible film, delivering a powerful message.
