To all of our dear family & friends, It’s probably time that you hear from me directly. As you can imagine this has been the most frightening and overwhelming experience of my life. I’m still having trouble finding the right words to share with you. Clay was in a car accident on March 21st and fell into a coma. On April 2nd at 6am the Dr. unhooked the ventilator to see if he could breathe on his own. He was doing well and as I was monitoring his breaths he woke up right before my eyes. I cant begin to describe the feelings I had, especially when I could tell he recognized me. We’ve recently transferred to a rehabilitation hospital where we will live together until it is time to go home and begin outpatient therapy. I’d like to share a few of my highlights with you… Clay walked for the first time last Thursday. He still had plenty of strength but his balance was a little off. With some help, he walked the entire floor of the hospital. Upon returning to his room he did a little jump and clicked his heels together with a grin…the therapist’s jaw dropped to the floor! He’s progressed dramatically in the last 2-3 days. His balance is coming back faster than anyone expected. I’m supposed to be helping him get around but I can barely catch up with him…he’s full steam ahead. He had to have a tracheotomy so he hasn’t been able to talk, however, the tube was downsized on Tuesday and he began speaking a little bit yesterday. I can’t tell you how nice it is to hear his voice again. I’m hoping the trach tube will be completely removed within 10 days. Our first order of business will be eating…he asked for BBQ and a pickle this morning! Yesterday afternoon the occupational therapist sat him in front of a piano. He smiled and his fingers just started moving…he’s still got it…he played great! There was a small audience by the time he was done. I was so happy & proud of him. Im getting his guitar today and Im sure he’ll be walking the halls serenading everyone before we know it. He’s already charmed the staff with his smile & good attitude. I am completely confident that, in time, Clay will be back 100%. One of Clay’s very best friends, Jason Ake, was extremely thoughtful and started a fundraiser to help us through his recovery. Every time somebody donates I receive an email and every time I am unable to hold back the tears. The love and support being sent our way is incredibly overwhelming for me. Clay was scheduled to perform at Larry Joe Taylor’s Texas Music Festival at the end of the month. I’ve been told that another band will not be taking his time slot…they say Clay is irreplaceable and I couldnt agree more. Instead they will honor him by playing his new CD for the audience with a picture of him and his wonderful smile on the big screen…this takes my breath away. I want to thank each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers. I will never be able to truly express my love and appreciation for the wonderful people in our lives. Clay and I have made a great team for 12 years…he is the love of my life and we will get through this together…we’re going to be okay. With sincerity, love & gratitude, Brandy
