To clarify: Im not of the hive mind that the guy w/ the shirt is a monster. I know nothing about him personally and have made no judgement on his character. He apologized so I think that hardly qualifies him as being a monster. I also dont agree with the severity of the reaction he received. People are far too bold when it comes to saying things online, and its sad how popular and easy it is for anybody to shoot off a Kill yourself comment at the blink of an eye. I dont agree with how hostile a lot of online feminists behave, but ultimately its not my place to tell women how to conduct themselves within the context of feminism. From what I understand, women at large go about their day to day lives in at least a minute measure of apprehension of men. And when a simple, seemingly innocent sidewalk interaction could result in them being assaulted, kidnaped, raped or, as Ive seen recently, murdered I think its a call for anyone who considers themselves a friend to women to fight this culture of fear or at the very least try to understand why a woman might react severely to something like this mans shirt. The fact that this guy was oblivious to the fact that his shirt was inappropriate for a work environment or that the art his shirt depicted could be considered offensive by women not also engaged in his interests is an assertion of the patriarchal power structure that causes daily trauma and anxiety to women everywhere. Is landing a spaceship on an asteroid so important for our society that we should completely disregard the feelings and experiences of millions and millions of women? I personally dont believe so. But I also believe this mans accomplishment doesnt deserve to be disregarded and his name dragged through the mud because of this scandal. It was appropriate for him to have apologized, but Im not comfortable with the way in which it was brought about.
