To quote one of my law professors, better that 100 guilty go free than 1 innocent person go to jail. Innocent until proven guilty is the cornerstone of the American criminal justice system. Philosophically Im in favor of the death penalty, but it has been pretty clear for some time now that the death penalty in the United States has major problems and should be (largely) abolished or otherwise put on hold. More than likely, we have recently executed innocent people, and that should be unacceptable to all. The death penalty should be reserved for the most heinous of crimes, where you are beyond any doubt, not beyond a reasonable doubt. If we cant have a system that does that then we should abandon the death penalty entirely washingtonpost/sf/national/2014/08/03/fresh-doubts-over-a-texas-execution/
