To those of you who dont know about my (free) mailers and may want to be on my mailing list (ask nicely), here is todays post for a sample: The One Point......... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That is where the buck stops. At one point. The point is who owns it. Don’t know what I am talking about? · You aren’t losing weight in spite of being with a gym · You are not getting healthier in spite of going to a good doctor · You are not getting more successful in a relationship in spite of photoshopping your pics · You are getting no better at your injuries in spite of physiotherapy Who owns the responsibility? It is usually the ‘other’ person. The trainer sucks. That doctor knows nothing. The guy you want is a swine. Your therapist is useless. Let’s change that. · I need to stop cheating on my eating plan every day. · I need to follow the doctor’s advice and follow up even if I am not doing well. · I need to be more interesting, not better looking. · I need to get stronger and move more. So, your engagement with your problem starts with “It’s my fault.” That’s where the buck stops. The one point from which meaningful progress starts. As someone who is bariatric surgeon, teacher, coach, strength student, knee patient, therapist, mentor, father and other half (yeah, I am a Traders’ Jack), I am on both sides. In each instance, whether I am giving or receiving care, if I start with “It’s my fault”, I shift the onus of action on to myself. I improve in the process. In your own interest, stop shifting blame on to others. If both care giver and taker do that, it makes for fabulous progress. Like a country that protects each citizen (innocent till proven guilty), and the citizen volunteers to serve it (country first). Get serious about your health, weight loss, strength, mobility and relationships (to complete the examples above). If I am wrong, feel free to share your disagreement with me. In strength, Doc
