To update our friends regarding our Girl Scout programming: - TopicsExpress

To update our friends regarding our Girl Scout programming: We’ve been in contact with our local Girl Scout council and look forward to meeting with them as soon as possible to discuss new opportunities for their Scouts. We’d be glad to offer a more robust suite of programs for Girl Scouts. In the meantime, here’s some background to inform you about our Scout programs in general: The Boy Scout workshops we offer fulfill specific badge requirements set forth by the Scouting organization. A merit badge counselor signs off on requirements completed during the workshops. We offer those programs as a public service to the Scouts in our community who want to complete their science badges. However, any child – boy or girl, Scout or not – is welcome to join in on those programs. You’ll note a phone number and a Web form are listed on the webpage for anybody who has questions or wants to register. Regarding Girl Scout-specific programming, we have struggled when it comes to enrollments. In the past, we have offered engineering, chemistry, and robotics programming for Girl Scouts. We created programming to go along with the new Journeys that Girl Scouts use. Unfortunately, no troops signed up for these. The programs that consistently get enrollments are Science with a Sparkle – which teaches girls about chemistry – and our Sleepovers at the museum. We are always happy to book private workshops for Scouts and cater to a science topic they are interested in. Research shows the value in girl-only programs; girls, for example, may feel more empowered to ask questions or engage with science when they’re among other girls. That’s why we see value in offering our array of Carnegie STEM Girls programs, such as STEM Stars, Tour Your Future, and CanTEEN: carnegiesciencecenter.org/stemcenter/carnegie-stem-girls/. Those programs give girls the opportunity to see female STEM professionals at their worksites, improve academic achievement, and learn about women making strides in STEM. Sadly, those programs, which provide an invaluable service to girls in the Pittsburgh region, are being overshadowed here. We’ve been a leader in offering STEM programs since acquiring the Girls Math and Science Partnership nearly a decade ago. Best of all are the dozens of gender-neutral science programs for children as young as 2. Those workshops range from robotics to Minecraft to astronomy and are open to boys and girls alike. We encourage all children to participate in any of our camps and to sharpen their science skills at competitions (ranging from the annual science fair to the Future City competition to the STEAM-favorite i5 Digital Video Competition).
