Tobyhanna Federal Credit Union awarded three local high school seniors a John Paul Ruggiero Scholarship. The winners are: Abigail Pipcho of Abington Heights High School (3rd), Margaret Dodgson of Scranton Preparatory High School (2nd), and Alexandria Soller of James M. Coughlin High School (1st). The placements of the three scholarship finalists were announced at the credit union’s 60th Annual Meeting which was held on Tuesday, April 22, 2014. The competition awards three scholarships totaling $4,500 to members who are local high school graduating seniors with plans to attend a 2 or 4 year accredited post-secondary institution. A total of 11 applications were received, evaluated, and graded by the credit union’s Scholarship Committee. Each application asks the students to provide information on academic achievement, extracurricular activities, demonstrated need, and community involvement. Along with the completed application, each student must submit an essay or other project based on a predetermined topic relating to the services and benefits of a credit union. “We always receive applications from some of the brightest and most ambitious young students in this area, which makes the job of our Scholarship Committee that much tougher,” said Sean Jelen, CEO. “We are proud to offer this scholarship to our members and we congratulate this year’s winners on their great accomplishments.” For more information about the John Paul Ruggiero Scholarship, please contact the credit union. New applications for the 2015 graduating seniors will be available in October 2014 on the TobyFCU website and in its branches.
