Today, August 24th – 50 years ago was the start of the VFW Nationals with the ever wonderful “INSPECTION”. Corps would spend hours getting everything just perfect and spotless for the judges. Then there was the inevitable wait for the Corps ahead of you to finish their inspection. When the time came and you were approached by the judge, you would perform a sharp military salute and start the process of walking in front of all your corps members and checking off anything the judge missed… which wasn’t much. I always felt guilty parading up and down with the judge - I didn’t have to stand at attention for the entire inspection like everyone else in the corps had to do. When it was done and the judge turned away, I would take off my shako and give the corps “Rest”. For all the Corps of that era, I dedicate this video to all that had to stand at attention and endure the “Inspection”. I am honored to have had the privilege to have been part of that great time in Drum & Bugle Corps history. Fifty years ago, the Seattle Thunderbirds were in Cleveland at the VFW Nationals. Our time came and we were ready for the test. By the end of the inspection, we were given 3 “tics” – not bad at all. Later we would find out that all inspection penalties were declared off the score sheets – all that time and effort to be almost perfect and it didn’t count….. Drum & Bugle Corps gave so many a direction, a dedication and honor, and a lifetime of wonderful memories and friends. In return, we gave our all on the field, win or lose, to all that attended the competitions or special events and performances. We loved to give our all and we enjoyed that others loved what we gave them.
