Today, I helped Becky (mom) take the twins to Chilis. An extremely rare treat for them. Its very difficult finding things they like to do & places they genuinely like to go. They appreciate good food so restaurants are the best outing. Becky heads over to pick me up leaving their shoes off for the car ride. Its easier to just put them on right before they get out of the car bc they tend to take them off. Becky has Allen; I have Jordan. I make sure there is no wait bc they dont understand waiting. Allen begins to gag loudly bc of the strong scents of food cooking. Becky sits with Allen in the waiting area so he can calm down & get used to the smells. I take Jordan onto the table. I ask the hostess if she could please sit in a booth bc Becky and I will need to pin them in bc sometimes they are tempted to take off. Jordan automatically sits back-to-back to another customer. Not good bc he rocks hard. Becky walks over with Allen finally seeing I cant get Jordan to get up and moves him to the other side. He listens to her! LoL We are settled and tea & food ordered! Becky brings a light snack in case they get inpatient waiting for their lunch. (We aim to go at off times for the coming reasons) Her and I are well under-way in a good convo and Jordan begins to make a loud you you you sounds. Becky tells him to calm down, offers him a snack. He starts to rocks hard against the back. Before we know it hes in a full melt-down. He quiets down long enough for us to discuss what to do. Weve learned to not even look at people around us. Its just not worth the possible rejection we might feel if we see a cross look. Jordan doesnt quit, he gets louder and starts bouncing up and down in protest. My husband (dad) says bring him to me over the phone. Becky and I get up from the booth and start telling Jordan lets go to daddys house. He gestured a refusal practically crying. But he is obedient and gets up. I hold his hand very tight and guide him all the way through the restaurant. (We were in the back) Jordan, all 230lbs/58 of him, jumped & hopped as high as he could yelling all the way through that mile. All I could do was pull him along as quickly as I could keeping my dignity and his as much as I could. All the while knowing mom so badly wanted to help her son but had no choice but to trust me since she needed to stay with Allen. We were determined to make this rare outing enjoyable. Jordan continued his plea all the way to my house and to the front door; yelling and hitting himself in the temples and head. I literally dropped Jordan off with dad and headed back to Chilis. By now youre probably guessing or wondering what was wrong with Jordan?! Well, he has been battling a sinus headache. Yep, thats it. All that bc of a headache. The good news? ALL of it was good! Becky, Allen, & I had a splendid lunch even followed by dessert and coffee! And Jordan? We thank God dad was our backup. He took care of his son with a little sinus remedy, bed rest, prayer, & a home-cooked lunch. The key is to find what makes them comfortable & happy. Forget about what others think. If their hearts are right they will learn a little something about the life of an Autistic. Our whole family loves them unconditionally. It was a wonderful outing an we thank God for how He has used these guys to teach us patience & love. Please watch. Then add in when they are feeling ill.
