Today I met my moms new roommate. Her name is Athena and she has suffered a traumatic brain injury from a car accident 5 months ago. Many people may look and her and think there is no hope for recovery, but I am a TBI survivor. 31 years ago my parents were told I would remain in a vegetative state. When I revived from a coma, I was told not to exect to walk unassisted ever again. I was told I would not be able to drive, live alone, succeed in higher education or ever have any hope of resuming an independent life. Since then I have obtained 3 college degrees and done everything that was on my Never Again list. Today I saw Athena respond with facial expressions, make eye contact and consume a little bit of a milk shake I brought her dad as he spoon fed her. Sshe has a long journey ahead, but I am hopeful she will eventually be able to talk and (if its Gods will) return to her Special Ed classroom at a local high school.
