Today I noticed Coles barely uses check out staff anymore. I dont know how anyone else feels about this but I know after doing the terrible chore of buying groceries the last thing I feel like doing is scanning them all myself? I actually want someone to ask me how my day is, even if they dont really care. Call me crazy but I enjoy the random banter with whoever is behind the counter. I enjoy sharing knowing looks with other mothers waiting inline who are also ready to strangle their children, it somehow makes me feel like less of a failure after repeating myself numerous times to my daughters who seem to have lost their ears somewhere in aisle seven. I like the human experience that comes with the chore and I cant help but feel like these machines we use to check out ourselves are somehow seperating society even more. Maybe Im just a small town girl with big ideals but I want some technology to just take a step back and bring back the only thing I enjoy about a weekly chore.
