Today I saw Werner Herzog speak as part of the Sundance Next Fest - TopicsExpress

Today I saw Werner Herzog speak as part of the Sundance Next Fest in support of the Zellner Brothers thoughtful film Kumiko the Treasure Hunter. Pretty quickly into the interview portion of the event, questions came up about how he felt about all the doppelgängers of him out there. He expressed delight at them, and said, joyfully, that he considered them his unpaid staff and bodyguards! He did express some consideration that they tended to be rather Teutonic and stiff, when he himself is a Bavarian. He compared that to the difference between being British and Scottish, as Bavarians are more rustic Mountain Men types who like to drink and fist fight in the taverns, and that they have an imagination! He is extremely aware of the fact that he is funny and that people find him funny, and talked about having to stick a big handkerchief in his mouth to gag himself when he watched Klaus Kinski act, since he always records the live sound and had to keep himself from laughing out loud and wrecking the take. A lot of the discussion was about how he created humor in his films, and he brought the house down many times. Herzog is comedy gold--luckily, for even more folks than himself!
