Today I want to focus on Jesus being a friend. He was a friend to two groups of people: Those who believed in Him and those who didn’t. But, just because you don’t believe in Jesus doesn’t mean He ignores you. If that were the case He wouldn’t have any friends and He wouldn’t have died on the cross for us. Jesus went around the area gathering His disciples. They didn’t believe in Him until He was there. Then He went around preaching and talking and healing all the others who didn’t believe in Him. Let’s look at some examples from Scriptures. Matthew 9:9-13—“And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom; and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him. And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples. And when the Pharisees saw it they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? But when Jesus heard that he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice; for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” Jesus was totally fine with who He was with. He had his good friends that lifted Him up and encouraged Him, but He also was friends with nonbelievers. He did that so he could win them to Himself too. That is how we should be. We need to have that friend that believes what we do, lifts us up when we need it, and encourages us along the way. But we also need to remember that we are put on this earth for a reason, and that is to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We can’t do that if we aren’t talking to others. Just be wary of how close you become to those nonbelievers. I am speaking from experience, and know just how quickly you can be brought down and away from Christ by spending too much time with that particular person. Make sure in your friendship that you are witnessing to them and trying to draw them to Christ. And if need be, cut off your friendship. Pray about it and see what God is saying to you.
