Today Ive come to suspect that I no longer know how to play with cars. Theres one parked on my coffee table that doubles as a bottle opener, and I decided to push it around a little to see if I could remember. For my first attempt, I gave it a little bump with my finger and slowly sent it nose- first into a book. That was pretty unsatisfying. Then I grabbed it with thumb and forefinger and tried to replicate my pre- driving impressions of how cars worked. Especially race cars that double as bottle openers and have jet engines on the back. This second attempt also ended in failure. Instead of skidding it around my water glass, or using the book cover as a ramp to launch the miniature four- wheeled rocket across the room, I parallel parked it quite expertly between a coaster and the TV remote. Worse, instead of making the sounds of a jet engine and squealing tires, my thinking voice said, Oh, well, that was very nicely done, Mr. Holladay. You executed Parallel Parking effortlessly. No, no, you should feel good about that. A lot of people have a hard time Parallel Parking. You seem to be a natural. Next lets try Backing Around A Corner. Somehow my screeching kid voice has been replaced by the voice of a sedated driving instructor, and Im not quite sure when that happened. Regardless, I have to practice Parking On A Hill now. My test is scheduled for next week and if I pass Im going to go for my CDL.
