Today I’m reflecting on how I might spend this day in honor of my Mother who is 100 on earth and 11 in heaven. If I could ask, she would say “Read, learn something new, do something for someone else that will make a difference”. She lived most of her days believing that we are here, not merely to exist, but to make the world a better place for future generations. (Definitely “A Purpose Driven Life”) Im reminded that she continues to live in all of our hearts as her wisdom and influence remains. She was driven to continue learning until very late in life and to attempt to be a positive influence in our country and world and in lives of her family and friends. She willingly felt obligated to teach and serve: her neighbors, encouraging and tutoring students, supporting and encouraging and mentoring teachers, giving support to worthy organizations that helped the underprivileged and the abused here and abroad. She remained well read on all aspects of world affairs especially science and politics. Among many issues, she was ahead of most. She spoke of her concerns regarding Global Warming before anyone knew Al Gore. She spoke of her concerns regarding ignorance and poverty in this country and was an advocate for education at all levels. She was a devout patriot, Conservative Democrat and felt it her patriotic duty to inform anyone who would listen. She was also a faithful Christian and lifelong servant in her church. She was warm, compassionate, fun and sometimes funny. She loved us all and we will always cherish her. If asked What can I do for you, Mom? Shed answer, Take care of your husband and be good to your children. Especially today, we thank God for giving us this Mother/Grandmother. So, what can I do today to honor my Mother on her 100th birthday? I’ll read something, learn something new and see where that takes me today.
